Here are some interesting numbers from the second annual survey of the users of Velib, the Parisian bike-sharing initiative. 27% of Velib subscribers use the service as their primary transportation. Wow. Courtesy of The Bike-Sharing Blog, which is run by MetroBike, LLC, a transportation consultancy that specializes in bike-share programs.
Their site links to initiatives of that kind worldwide, which you'll enjoy if you're a bike transit nerd.
On a related note, I noticed that the Velib bikes use Schwalbe Marathon tires. They're about the most puncture-resistant touring tire out there, and are available for purchase at, ahem, your finer bike shops. We can't get you the fresh molded plastic handlebar bits, though.
