Advocacy
TTR Bikes is committed to bicycle advocacy. It's part of our mission here, as a corporation and as individuals. Because of our location and our business, we often focus on issues of relevance to commuters, urban riders, and users of greenways, but we support--with our energy, time, and money--a wider range of groups who back cycling and advocate on behalf of cyclists.
We like to see more people on bikes, riding safely ... whether they're riding to work, doing big miles in the Northern Greenville County, drafting at Donaldson Center, riding dirt, or puttering in the park.
As of 2011, we're pleased to announce that TTR Bikes has been named a Platinum Level Bike Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists.
Here are some of the issues and organizations we support:
- Bikeville initiative — Greenville is working hard to achieve the next level of the League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly Community certification. Learn about the effort and other bike-advocacy-related stuff here. A new website with further details will be launching soon. If you're interested in getting involved in the community, this is a great place to start.
- Greenville Spinners — The Spinners support and organize events and programs that have helped to raise the profile of cycling in the Upstate. In addition to organizing local races and events, they run a safety foundation that helps kids ride safely, and include an advocacy arm that is working across a range of cycling-related issues. Join here.
- Palmetto Cycling Coalition — The PCC does great work for all SC cyclists. Their efforts led to the new bicycle bill passed in Summer 2008. See their site for details. Join, if you haven't already.
- Upstate SORBA — Representing the Upstate's MTB community. A great site and a valuable source of information.
- League of American Bicyclists — Promoting cycling, educating communities, and watching your back in Washington.
- www.roadrelations.com—A cooperative effort to promote road safety between motorists and bicyclists
- Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
- MyBikeLaw — A valuable legal resource for cyclists . . . outstanding people who fight the good fight on behalf of cyclists and work to sustain bike advocacy in SC.
We often hear from people who feel powerless or marginalized when confronted with irresponsible users of the road or with officials who don't know or don't care about the laws that establish our rights or responsibilities out there. If you've ever felt that way, we offer two suggestions:
- Join one or more of the groups listed above. Amplify your voice.
- Contact your elected representatives at the local, state, and federal level. Whether they're enlightened public servants, reactionary nitwits or somewhere in between, they need to hear from you as a representative of the cycling community. Let them know you support trails and greenways and smarter transit spending. Ask them to make sure your rights on the road are upheld, or just let them know that you ride and you vote.
